While it doesn’t have the most exciting name, Chinese Kitchen, located in central Irkutsk, is a hard-to-miss place for quality Chinese food in a comfortable atmosphere. The interior of the cafe is nicely decorated, and even looks a bit fancy, but a quick glance around the average lunch customers and you see that it still has a casual feel to it, especially at lunch time, with the number of students eating there. The cafe is sit-down style, so you find yourself a table and they will bring you a menu to order from. Like many places in Irkutsk, they offer a very affordable lunch special, which gives you a main dish (different each day) along with soup, salad, rice, bread and tea all for 150 rubles. When I went there with my friend Emily, however, we were feeling more in the mood for one particular dish, which we both like, so we ordered from the main menu. The dishes on the main menu are more expensive than the lunch special, but they give more food, so it’s usually a good idea to share things between two or more people. We ordered eggplant, pepper and potato stir-fry (290 rubles) with a side of fried rice (75 rubles) and tea (80 rubles) to share. Our total per person came to 223 rubles. The food took awhile to come, but when it did, it was delicious! It tasted very fresh and flavorful, and less greasy than the other Chinese places I’ve tried in Irkutsk. For lunch, this is a great option for Chinese cuisine in Irkutsk, and it’s an especially good place to go to try new dishes to share among friends. I look forward to coming back and trying the many other dishes they have to offer!
